So...you know how back in the day doctors advised newly pregnant moms to basically cease all physical activity and just sit cooped up to make sure their baby's health was intact? Right, so fast forward to the 20th century, Doctors strongly recommend expectant mothers be physically active throughout their pregnancy. Statics show expectant mothers who workout throughout pregnancy usually have shorter, less complicated deliveries and recoveries vs. expectant mothers who are sedentary. Even when TTC (Trying-To-Conceive) fertility doctors recommend to adopt a regular physically active routine which has shown to increases chances of conception! 

 

GREAT SO WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR ME?

Alright Momma, I know this is a SUPER exciting time in your life and whether this is your first time or your 11th time (God Bless...haha), then you need to know that physically, your CORE 4 is the main driver in this journey and who needs to train specifically to minimize aches and pains during pregnancy, keep baby comfy and cozy in the womb, and make sure we're quite literally TRAINING you for the big day! So who's the CORE 4 you might ask? She is made up of 4 parts: the Pelvic Floor, Transverse Abdominals, Multifidus- deep spine muscles, and the Diaphragm. She is  responsible for keeping your posture aligned when your belly and breasts start to grow, ensuring your abdominals are expanding correctly to make a comfy home for baby, making sure you can still breath when baby is cramming into your ribs, and the most important part...making sure you can contract the muscles in your pelvis to push your baby out safely and efficiently!

Let's see exactly which Trimester you're in so I can help curate trimester-specific workouts to ensure the safety of you and your baby while training for the big day! I recommend you visit your Doctor first just to get the "okay" to begin/resume physical activity. Let's work together to create a daily workout and/or nutrition regimen that is only of the highest benefit to you and baby. Remember, this is not the time to push your MAX PR, rather to work to strengthen your foundational muscles and nourish your body and growing baby to promote a healthy pregnancy and a safe delivery.

Yes, after giving birth you're considered to be in your 4th Trimester and all the way up to 52 weeks!  This time is all about recovery and rehabilitation of your CORE 4 as mentioned above in my prenatal coaching section. This is NOT the time to simply "bounce back"  as celebs make it seem and I truly believe as a society this is a narrative that MUST be changed. For goodness sake sister, you just went through such an incredible and exhausting journey in your life all while bringing this precious gift of life into this world. Don't you agree rather than punishing the woman in the mirror you should send her love and give her the grace she needs to fully recovery, tend to the new baby, and help this Momma in this new chapter of her life?

 

YOU'RE RIGHT, TIME TO HEAL AND RECOVER! WHAT NOW?

Alright my new Momma, remember I mentioned the CORE 4 and training her, yes her, throughout pregnancy? Here's a quick breakdown to refresh your memory: She is made up of 4 parts: the Pelvic Floor, Transverse Abdominals, Multifidus- deep spine muscles, and the Diaphragm. Right... so while naturally your CORE 4 has the ability to heal herself, she still needs a little help and rehabilitation to maintain proper alignment, stability, and functionality. You may notice you have some bladder leakage and/or slight separation in your abdominal muscles (Diastastis Recti), or maybe even a protrusion of your c-section scar that wasn't there before. The Good News??? These are all parts of the CORE 4 that just like your other muscles can be retrained and rehabilitated to help you heal faster and get you back on a regular schedule of physical activity so you can be the strong Mom you know you can be for both you AND baby! 

 

ALRIGHT, I'M READY...HOW DOES THIS WORK?

AFTER...only AFTER you've been cleared by your Doctor to resume physical activity (at least 8 weeks post delivery), we will work to curate a 360 postnatal plan specific to your recovery and needs. I.e. Are you breastfeeding? Did you have a C-section? Do you have DR (Diastastic Recti)? According to your needs, more specifically if you DO have Diastic Recti (which is PERFECTLY NORMAL), your tailored coaching program will be geared towards daily rehabilitative CORE 4 movements as well as functional strength movements for daily mommy-and-me tasks i.e. picking up that heavy a** baby carrier without throwing your back out! And let's not forget the proper nourishment of our bodies for recovery especially for those who are breastfeeding!
