Don’t Ditch those Healthy Habits on Vacation! Summer Tips On How To Stay On Track

Ahhh we’ve waited all year for this beautiful sunshine, weekend getaways, sand between our toes, and salty ocean breeze. BUT WAIT! Don’t throw away all of your hard work in the gym, at home, and in the kitchen! And Lord knows I’m not telling you not to enjoy the heck out of your well deserved vacation. But here are some quick tips that will help you stick with those goals while you’re enjoying every little last bit of Summer and Vitamin Sea.

Workouts: I know the last thing you probably want to do is go to the gym while you’re on vacation and I sure as heck wouldn’t want to either. What I do suggest are these tips for fitness.

  • Turn that all day beach lounging into a nice long walk down to the boardwalk and back. No need to put on your workout clothes for this one either. The sand provides a serious terrain for a leg burning/heart pumping workout. Make sure to dig deep with your heals in the sand so your legs work harder to push you forward.
  • Body Weight Workouts- No need for equipment to work your whole body in the Summer sun. Try a circuit of 10 Air Squats, 10 Push Ups, and 10 Plank Jacks 6x through. There you have it, no equipment and no time wasted from the beach, baby!
  • Rent a Bike- You see them all the time on the boardwalk and on the beach, so get up and rent one by yourself or with a friend. This is one of my favorite ways to get in a workout while enjoying the beautiful scenery Summer has in store for you. Note: The sand will make this workout a bit more challenging.

Eats: Girl, why would I want to spend my vacation eating like a rabbit when I’ve waited all year for those boardwalk fries? I’m right there with you, don’t you worry. The way I enjoy my healthy eats during the Summer is by indulging in Summer’s harvest with all the seasonal produce (and of course, the occasional board walk funnel cake)

  • Farmer’s Market- Hit up your local Farmer’s market for this season’s sweetest berries, sweetest peppers, and my favorite homemade pickles. This is prime time for these Farmer’s markets and the beauty of this is that they’re everywhere you go. I challenge you to search “Farmer’s market” in your phone next time you travel. You’ll be amazed at the ones right under your nose, even more amazed with all the freshest/sweetest treats these markets have to bring you.
  • Have a salsa garden? Do you have a friend with a backyard garden? Take full advantage of these amazing friends of yours who more than likely have a full bounty of fresh produce they are willing to divide up amongst their friends. Want to make a garden yourself? Go for it! Start small with 4-5 produce plants and I’m sure you’ll have some harvested by the end of Summer. Something is so special about your own produce when you’ve grown and cared for it yourself.
  • Grilling- It’s grilling season baby! This is one of my favorite ways to cook my veggies which make them bursting with flavor. So hey, next time you’re on the grill put in more than just a serving for yourself, put more on there for the following days to come. I love having my leftovers in the fridge and ready to go for my next meal. That way you don’t have to eat out for every meal.

Self Care: Sometimes while we’re on vacation we are a bit smothered by family and constantly getting pulled in every direction for different outings. Don’t forget about YOU.

  • Read a book- That’s right, whip out that sexy novel and get to reading. A little reading time by the pool or by the ocean is a great way to care for your mental health while dozing off into Lala land wrapped up in the storylines.
  • Find some shells- This one brings me so much joy. Every beach I go to I find a few of my favorite shells and bring them back home. The process of finding these perfect shells is soothing in itself and allows you to be one with nature. When you bring them home, place them somewhere you will see each day to remind you of that beautiful moment spent in the sand by the water with the sun shining on you.
  • Watch the sunset- What’s more peaceful then cuddling up in a hammock, porch, or the sand and watching the sun go down? Next time you do this, close your eyes and be present in the moment. Listen to nature’s beautiful soundtrack and keep this sweet moment in a memory that you can come to when times get stressful.

There you have it folks, some Summer tips that will help you stay on track of your healthy habits while still having the time of your lives! Need extra guidance while on vacation?
